Choose Your Course

Start with the Japanese you already know and what you want to be able to do next.

Complete beginners can start with Beginners 1 Class. If you have studied Japanese before, compare Beginners, Pre-Intermediate, and Intermediate and look for the point where the vocabulary, grammar, and examples begin to feel new.

Conversation is another option if practical speaking is your main priority, while JLPT Test Prep is for students preparing specifically for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

If you are completely new to Japanese:

JLPT Test Prep requires a placement test before enrollment.

Choose Your Lesson Style

Once you know what you want to study, the next question is how you want to learn it.

Lecture is instructor-led, with students learning and practicing together. Intensive-Lecture follows an instructor-led course on a more concentrated schedule, while Self-Paced lets you move through structured course material according to your own progress with instructor support.

Not every course is available in every lesson style, so check the course details before choosing.

If you only have short time to study Japanese:

If you want to understand Self-Paced in more detail:

Choose Your Schedule

Next, look at how Japanese can fit into your week.

A Fixed Schedule gives you the same scheduled days and times each week. Flex gives you more control over when and how often you attend available Japanese classes.

Your lesson style and your attendance option are separate decisions. Self-Paced describes how you learn, while Fixed and Flex describe how you attend and pay.

Before enrolling, check the current weekly schedule, tuition, registration fee, materials, and the booking or cancellation conditions that apply to the option you choose.

Choose Trial or Direct Enrollment

There are two ways to begin, and you do not have to take a Trial Lesson before enrolling.

If you are still deciding, want to see Blue House first, or would feel more comfortable visiting before choosing, you can start with a Trial Lesson. It gives you a chance to see the school, ask questions, and get a clearer idea of where you may want to begin.

If you already know which class you want, you can skip the Trial Lesson and enroll directly.

A Trial Lesson is optional. It is there when it helps you decide.

Enroll Online

Once your course, lesson style, and schedule are decided, check the final details before completing enrollment.

Make sure you have reviewed the current tuition, registration fee, materials, and the booking or cancellation conditions that apply to your plan. Then continue through the online enrollment and payment process for the class you selected.

After payment, an automatic email will guide you to the next step. If you do not see it in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder first.

Complete Your Online Orientation

After enrollment, Online Orientation helps you get ready before your first class.

Once your payment is complete, an automatic email will be sent with the Online Orientation URL. If you do not see the email in your inbox, check your spam or junk folder.

After setting up your account and password, you can complete the Online Orientation online. Please finish it before your first class.

During the Orientation, you will:

  • Set up your profile
  • Introduce yourself in Living Room
  • Send a message to your instructor
  • Learn how to use the Study Room and online learning materials
  • See how Language Exchange works
  • Learn how to study and participate in your class

You do not need to memorize the whole Blue House system before your first lesson. The Orientation shows you the things you need first, and the rest becomes easier to understand once you begin using it.

If you are ready to start the Orientation but cannot find the automatic email, check your spam or junk folder one more time before contacting us.

If you want to understand the learning system before you enroll:

Your Japanese Class Begins

Once enrollment and the required preparation are complete, your Japanese class begins.

You do not have to arrive knowing how everything works. As you start using the materials and joining class, you’ll gradually get used to the learning process and become more comfortable asking questions, practicing pronunciation, and using the Japanese you are learning.

Then those small moments start happening outside class, too. A word on a menu suddenly looks familiar. You recognize part of a question at a store, remember how to ask someone to repeat something, or find yourself saying a sentence you could not say before.

Little by little, the Japanese you study becomes Japanese you can recognize, remember, and use in your life in Okinawa.

Blue House Okinawa is located near Sunabe Seawall, close to Kadena Air Base Gate 1.

Still Have a Practical Question Before You Start?

If you know which course you want but still have a question about finding Blue House, parking, class schedules, or what to do before you arrive, you do not need to search through the other pages one by one.

Before You Come to Blue House

You may already be thinking about taking a Japanese class, but still have a few practical questions before you decide.

Where is Blue House? Where should you park? Which class should you look at? Do you need to take a Trial Lesson first?

Here are the things that are helpful to know before you come.

On This Page

Where Is Blue House Okinawa?

Blue House Okinawa is located near Sunabe Seawall, close to Kadena Air Base Gate 1.

Before your first visit, take a look at the map and entrance photo below. Knowing what the building looks like before you arrive can make that first visit much easier.

Where Should I Park?

Blue House Okinawa does not have its own parking lot.

If you are driving, please park along Sunabe Seawall and walk to the school from there. The walk only takes a few minutes, but give yourself a little extra time on your first visit.

Please do not park directly in front of Blue House Okinawa or along the surrounding residential streets.

We want to be good neighbors to the people who live around the school, too.

I’m Completely New to Japanese. Where Do I Start?

You do not need to know Japanese before you begin.

Beginners 1 Class is the starting point for complete beginners.

You’ll start with pronunciation, greetings, Hiragana, and simple Japanese.

If Japanese is completely new to you, there is already a clear place to begin.

If you want a little more guidance before looking at the full class page:

What If I’ve Studied Japanese Before?

If you have studied Japanese before, you may not need to start over.

Maybe you can already handle simple everyday Japanese but want to keep a conversation going longer. Maybe you want to explain your experiences and opinions in more detail, focus mainly on practical speaking, or prepare for the JLPT.

You can compare the different Japanese classes and start around the point where the Japanese begins to feel new.

When Are Classes, and How Much Do They Cost?

Class times and tuition depend on the class and the way you choose to attend.

The current weekly schedule, tuition, Fixed and Flex options, registration fee, and materials fees are kept together on the Tuition & Schedule page.

That way, you can compare the current practical details in one place instead of finding different versions across several pages.

What If My Schedule Changes a Lot?

Some weeks are simply busier than others.

Blue House has different ways to learn and different ways to attend, so Japanese does not have to fit only one rigid routine.

A Fixed Schedule gives Japanese a regular place in your week. Flex gives you more control over when and how often you attend available classes.

If your schedule changes often, compare those two options before you choose.

Do I Have to Take a Trial Lesson Before I Enroll?

No.

A Trial Lesson is available if you would like to experience Blue House before deciding, but it is optional.

If you already know which Japanese class you want, Direct Enrollment is also available.

Already know which class you want?

What Do I Do Once I Know Which Class I Want?

Once you know which class you want to take, the next step is enrollment.

You do not need to work out the process from different pages. The enrollment guide will take you through what to do next.

Ready to Start?

You do not have to know exactly how far you want to take your Japanese before you begin.

You can start with one class, learn something small, and see where it goes.

A word that used to pass by unnoticed may suddenly make sense on a sign. You may recognize something someone says at a store, order something in Japanese, or find yourself using a sentence you could not say before.

Those small moments are part of learning Japanese while you are living in Okinawa.

When you are ready, choose the Japanese class that fits where you want to begin.

Living Room & Study Room

Stay Connected, Learn Together, and Let Japanese Become Part of Your Life in Okinawa

Your Japanese Class Can Be the Beginning of Something More

Class may end for the day, but the people, conversations, and reasons to keep using Japanese do not always have to end there.

What begins in class can continue between lessons, grow through small interactions, and sometimes lead to time spent learning with other people outside the classroom. Japanese can become more than something you study; it can become another way to take part in life around you.

Your Japanese class can be the beginning of something more.

On This Page

Stay Connected After Class

Living Room is Blue House Okinawa’s online community for current students, where you can see posts, photos, questions, and comments from people you meet through the school.

After class, everyone goes back to work, family, errands, or their own plans. Later, you may open Living Room and see a familiar name or face from class. Someone might share a photo, write a little about their day, ask a simple question, or leave a short comment on something another student posted.

Sometimes simply seeing what other people are doing gives you something to talk about the next time you meet. A photo from the weekend can become a question in class, and a short post can become a conversation.

The connection does not have to disappear when the lesson ends.

Blue House Okinawa English: Japanese School App.406

Start by Looking. Join When You Feel Ready.

You do not have to be outgoing, confident, or good at Japanese to be part of the community. You do not have to introduce yourself to everyone or start posting right away.

You can begin by looking. See what other students share, look at a photo, or leave a reaction. If you feel comfortable, you can write one short comment, ask a question, or eventually share something from your own day.

There is no need to make every post long or important. A quick “That looks fun,” a short question, or a few words of encouragement can be enough to join the conversation.

Look → React → Leave a Comment → Share Something of Your Own

You can move through those steps at your own pace. Starting small is completely okay.

Get Help — and Be Someone Who Helps, Too

Sometimes you may be the person asking the question. Maybe you are not sure what an expression means, want to know how someone studies, or want to ask about something another student shared.

Another time, you may already know something that can help. You might know the place someone is asking about, have experienced the same problem before, or see someone working hard and leave a few encouraging words.

Community does not only mean having people who can help you. You may be surprised by how much you already have to offer, even if your Japanese is still a work in progress.

You do not need advanced Japanese to support another person. Sometimes an answer, a recommendation, or a few encouraging words are enough.

There can be people who support you. And you can become someone who supports others, too.

Study Together. Help Each Other.

Studying Japanese on your own can get frustrating. You get stuck on a question, lose motivation, or simply wish there were someone else to study with.

Study Exchange is an optional, student-led gathering where students can meet in person, bring what they are working on, and help each other. It is not a regularly scheduled school event; it happens when students choose to organize one.

Sometimes it starts with a simple post in Living Room:

“Does anyone want to study together?”

If students are organizing a gathering, you can check the details and decide whether it works for you. Sometimes simply having someone else at the table makes it a little easier to keep going.

Over time, you may also find yourself doing more than asking for help. You might answer someone else’s question, share what worked for you, or be the person who brings everyone together next time.

Study Japanese while helping your Japanese peers to study English!

Someone You Study With Can Become Someone You Look Forward to Seeing Again

At first, you may meet because you are both studying.

You sit together, work through something difficult, explain what you know, or ask someone else for help. Then you meet again, and someone remembers what you were working on last time or continues a conversation that started in Living Room.

Little by little, someone you study with can become someone you recognize, someone you help or who helps you, and sometimes someone you look forward to seeing again. The community can begin to feel less like something you joined and more like a place where there are people you are happy to see.

You may find yourself thinking, “It would be nice to see them again.”

Language Exchange May '19

Sometimes Learning Together Can Grow into Something More

Sometimes that is where the experience begins to grow beyond studying.

A Study Exchange may finish and someone suggests getting something to eat. Someone may mention an event or festival they want to visit, or a conversation about the weekend may turn into talking about the beach or another place in Okinawa that someone would like to see.

Not every Study Exchange leads to time together outside study, and it does not have to. But learning together can become a chance to know people beyond the time you spend studying together.

You may learn about another person’s culture and experiences while they learn something about yours. Japanese can start becoming part of a conversation, a shared afternoon, a meal, an event, a festival, a trip to the beach, or another experience somewhere in Okinawa.

Those moments may give the Japanese you are learning a place in your everyday life. Not because every interaction becomes a friendship or a lasting relationship, but because Japanese gives you more opportunities to take part, communicate, and connect.

Little by little, learning Japanese can become connected not only to what you study, but also to how you experience life in Okinawa.

Hear from a Student

My biggest regret living on Okinawa is not signing up for this class sooner. I look forward coming to this class before work in the afternoon as the staff are so welcoming, friendly and patient. I also get to meet fellow curious students who want to challenge themselves and grow by learning another language. This helps keep my accountability on studying japanese more than the Duolingo streak does.

A Community You Can Use While You’re a Student

Living Room is available to current Blue House students at no additional charge while they are enrolled. Access ends when your enrollment or course participation ends.

Students and staff may respond to posts, but a response to every post is not guaranteed. Living Room is also not a service where staff correct every message or every piece of Japanese you write.

Study Exchange is organized by students and participation is optional. Gatherings are not guaranteed to take place, participation is not guaranteed, and the meeting location may vary rather than being fixed as a permanent school event.

How much you take part — from simply looking at a post to joining a Study Exchange or inviting someone to study — is up to you.

How Community Connects with the Rest of Your Learning

Living Room and Study Exchange do not replace your Japanese class. Your class gives you the structured learning itself, while Living Room gives you a place to stay connected between lessons and Study Exchange can create another opportunity to study with other students when someone chooses to organize one.

The community is one part of a larger learning process. What you study through your textbook, Study Room, Workbook, and class can give you something to ask about, share, or practice with other people, while those interactions can give you new questions and reasons to keep learning.

If you want to understand how those parts work together:

If you want to see how the Japanese you study can move into a real conversation with another person:

Choose a Japanese Class That Connects You to More Than Class Time

Your class is where the learning begins.

Living Room gives you a way to stay connected between lessons, and Study Exchange can create opportunities to take that connection into real time with other students.

From there, sometimes something simple can grow. A comment can become a conversation, a conversation can lead to studying together, and someone you study with may become someone you are happy to see again.

Japanese can start connecting not only to what you study, but also to the people you meet and the experiences you have while living in Okinawa.

Choose the Japanese course that fits what you want to learn, then see where that learning can take you.

Language Exchange

Language Exchange at Blue House Okinawa

Language Exchange Is Where the Give-and-Take of Learning Happens

Don’t wait for perfection to participate. Start with what you can.

You may understand the Japanese when you study it and still think, “I’m nervous about speaking in Japanese to locals…” when a real person is sitting in front of you. Language Exchange gives you a place to take that first small step: bring the Japanese you have been learning into a real conversation and try one question.

When the Japanese You Studied Gets a Real Answer

Maybe a question such as “What did you do this weekend?” felt easy enough when you practiced it. Then you sit down with another person, feel that little bit of nervousness again, and say it anyway.

This time, the answer does not come from a textbook, worksheet, or example sentence. Another person actually answers you.

The reply may be close to what you imagined, or it may be something you never expected. Either way, the Japanese you studied has already done something different: it helped you ask a real person something you wanted to know.

And for a moment, you realize something simple but important: your Japanese was not perfect, but they understood what you were trying to say.

You do not need to arrive ready to talk about anything and everything. Before you start, you can decide what you would actually like to ask.

See how our in-class Language Exchange started

Blue House Okinawa Japanese School

Prepare Something You Really Want to Talk About

The Workbook and the Japanese you are already studying can help you prepare questions and answers about your own life. Instead of stopping with a model sentence from a lesson, you can turn the same grammar and vocabulary into something you would genuinely like to say or ask.

Your notes do not need to be complicated. You might prepare a few questions about someone’s weekend, food they like, a place they have visited, or something happening in Okinawa, along with a little Japanese about yourself in case the same question comes back to you.

What you prepare gives you something specific to ask about and something meaningful to practice. You are not being asked to walk into the room and invent an entire conversation from nothing.

You can prepare what you want to ask. What you cannot prepare is every answer you are going to hear.

If You Miss Something, Ask Again

You ask your question, and the answer comes back a little faster than you expected. Maybe there is a word you have never heard before, or the other person answers in a completely different way from the example you practiced.

You may understand the whole answer, but you may also catch only part of it.

Slow down, pick out what you know, and start from there. Listen to the answer, and if you miss something, ask again: “Mou ichido itte kudasai.”

The other person says it again, and this time you may catch one more familiar word or finally understand what they were trying to tell you. You do not have to understand every word for the conversation to continue; sometimes understanding a little more the second time is enough to keep going.

And after someone helps you with your Japanese, the exchange can turn the other way. The other person is learning too.

Get Help — Then Help Someone Else

Language Exchange is student-driven and designed to be a mutually beneficial learning experience.

You can use the Japanese you prepared with another learner, then help them with the language they are learning too.

Maybe the other person repeated a Japanese sentence more slowly, helped you understand an expression, or showed you another way to say what you meant. When the language changes, you have a chance to help them too — asking questions, sharing cultural insights, and giving each other feedback as the conversation moves back and forth.

Both people are learning. Both people have something to give.

And sometimes, once you stop concentrating only on getting the language right, you begin noticing the person behind the language too. A question about food can turn into hearing about someone’s family; a question about the weekend can lead to a place you have never visited.

The conversation becomes more than practice for a moment. You are learning a little more about another person’s experiences, culture, and point of view.

And the Japanese you used here did not begin here. You brought it with you from your study and class.

Blue House Okinawa Japanese /English School Language Exchange 5

What You Prepare and Practice Can Continue into Language Exchange

Textbook → Study Room → Workbook → Class → Language Exchange

The question you just used may have started with something you learned in your textbook, reviewed in the Study Room, connected to your own life in the Workbook, and checked or practiced in class.

Language Exchange is where that same Japanese can leave the learning materials and meet another person.

Then the conversation gives you something new to bring back. You may hear a new word, discover that you need more listening practice, think of another question you want to ask next time, or simply realize that you would like to know a little more about the person you were talking with.

The conversation gives you something new to learn, and the cycle begins again.

This is one part of the larger way Japanese moves from study into actual use at Blue House.

Every Language Exchange Can Be a Little Different

A real conversation can give you more than language practice. You may hear about another person’s experiences, compare something about life in Japan and another country, or discover a perspective you had never thought about before.

The people you practice with may change from one exchange to the next, so every conversation can be a little different.

Hear from a Student

I recommend Blue House Okinawa to anybody that wishes to learn Japanese. I learned that Japanese is difficult at Blue House Okinawa but students here are motivated to learn, Japanese people are kind and helpful. Blue House Okinawa is like a family where everyone is welcomed.
Mr. Garion Hallmon

Garion’s review describes his own experience — arriving nervous, feeling welcomed, and getting to practice Japanese while other students practiced English. It is one student’s experience, so each Language Exchange may feel different depending on who is participating that day.

The people and pairings can change from one exchange to the next, and Language Exchange is not designed as a guaranteed one-on-one pairing or as a guarantee that a particular type of speaker will be present. What stays consistent is the opportunity to use the Japanese you have been building with the people who are there and see where a real conversation takes you.

So the next question is not who you will be paired with. It is what kind of Japanese you want to be able to bring into that conversation.

Choose the Japanese You Want to Use

If you are starting Japanese from zero, you can begin by building the foundation. If you have studied before, you can find the course where Japanese starts to feel new again.

And if your main priority is practical speaking, Conversation Class gives you a different route focused more directly on communication.

You do not need to compare every class here. Choose the direction that fits what you want to be able to say, then find the Japanese class that can help you start building toward that conversation.

Compare Your Actual Japanese Before You Choose

Have you studied Japanese before but are not sure which Blue House class matches what you already know?

The textbook or course name you used before may not match our levels exactly. Different materials introduce vocabulary and grammar in different orders.

That is why this page shows you the actual vocabulary, grammar, and example sentences taught across our Japanese classes.

Start with what you already understand, then look for the point where the Japanese begins to feel unfamiliar.

There are three things to decide:

1. Your Level or Course

What You Are Choosing: What Japanese you want or need to study

2. Your Lesson Style

What You Are Choosing: How you want to learn it

3. Your Schedule

Start by Choosing Your Route

Before comparing grammar levels, first think about what you want Japanese class to help you do.

Conversation is not simply the level after Beginners or Intermediate. JLPT Test Prep is also a goal-based route.

Focus mainly on practical speaking, pronunciation, listening, and everyday expressions

Start by looking at…: Conversation Class

Build Japanese systematically through vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking

Start with the Japanese You Already Know

You do not need to start from Beginners 1 just because you are new to Blue House.

If you have studied Japanese somewhere else, compare the classes and levels below with what you already understand and use.

The right starting point is usually around the place where the vocabulary, grammar, and example sentences begin to feel new.

Conversation — A Different Route

Focus on Practical Speaking

Conversation is different from the Beginners → Pre-Intermediate → Intermediate progression.

It is not the next grammar level.

It is a separate route for learners who want to focus more directly on practical communication rather than following the full grammar-based progression.

There is no required homework or pre-study.

Conversation is available through Lecture and Intensive-Lecture.

Intensive-Lecture

Want to compare the two concentrated one-month routes?

If you want to build Japanese systematically through vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, continue to the general level progression below.

Beginners 1–4

Beginners is divided into four stages.

If you have never studied Japanese before, start with Beginners 1 Class.

Beginners 1 is available through Lecture, Intensive-Lecture, or Self-Paced.

Language Exchange

Use the Japanese You Are Learning

Language Exchange is not limited to Conversation Class.

It gives students a place to take Japanese they have been studying and try using it with Japanese students who are learning English too.

A real conversation can also show you something that a textbook cannot: which Japanese comes out naturally, where you hesitate, and what you may want to work on next.

More Than a Japanese Class

Class may end for the day, but the people, conversations, and reasons to keep using Japanese don’t always have to end there.

The connection doesn’t have to disappear when the lesson ends.

Sometimes it’s simply useful language practice. Sometimes a conversation leads to studying together, learning something about another person, or becoming happy to see someone again.

Japanese can start connecting not only to what you study, but also to the people you meet and the experiences you have while living in Okinawa.

What Students Say About Learning at Blue House

The reviews below describe students’ overall experience at Blue House Okinawa.

They are not used to claim that either student completed a specific class or level.

Since arriving in Okinawa, Blue House has been an extremely friendly and encouraging environment to begin learning Japanese! The evening classes have been a perfect fit for my busy work schedule and helps me set goals within designated lesson plans. The biggest advantage from blue house is the ability to practice pronunciation, overall speaking ability, and receive real feedback. It is hard to take the first steps into learning a new language but every class I have attended has made me feel comfortable with making mistakes/challenging to do better. It has been rewarding using new vocabulary or sentence structures learned throughout the course and applying it to daily life here in Japan. This is why the unique addition of the language exchange with other Japanese students at the end of each class is something I look forward to every time. On top of the in house learning, they have provided a structure that helps me study throughout the week as well. Given that learning Japanese can be very difficult to begin, this is very useful in creating a focus point and tracking progress made. As I have just completed my first course, I will be taking the next one and highly recommend for someone who wants the extra push to become more involved with learning Japanese language/culture while living in Okinawa.

Blue House Okinawa is my family! We are leaving island soon and Blue House Okinawa was really the best part of my Okinawa experience. It’s worth every penny. Learning Japanese at Blue House Okinawa is fun and very. I have made friends here and Monica sensei is kind and patient. My classmates are also kind. Japanese is hard and I get shy when I talk in Japanese but Blue House Okinawa helps me learning.
Ms. Janice Blanchard
I recommend Blue House Okinawa to anybody that wishes to learn Japanese. I learned that Japanese is difficult at Blue House Okinawa but students here are motivated to learn, Japanese people are kind and helpful. Blue House Okinawa is like a family where everyone is welcomed.

Ready to Choose?

You do not need to match the name of a class you took somewhere else.

Look at the Japanese itself.

Start with the vocabulary, grammar, and examples you already understand. When the material begins to feel unfamiliar, you have found a useful place to compare more closely.

Then decide how you want to learn and how you want to attend.

Conversation
What It’s For: Practical speaking and pronunciation

Beginners
What It’s For: Building the Japanese foundation

Pre-Intermediate
What It’s For: Moving beyond short everyday answers

Intermediate

JLPT Test Prep
What It’s For: Preparing specifically for N5, N4, or N3

What do I want to study?

Want to Visit Blue House First?

You do not have to have your whole Japanese-learning plan figured out before you visit. If seeing the school and talking through your options would help you decide where to begin, a Trial Lesson gives you that chance.

If you already know which Japanese class you want, you can go directly to the class options instead. Either way, you can choose the next step that fits where you are now.

Living in Okinawa, have you wondered;

  • I always go to the same restaurants. Where do local people in Okinawa like to eat?
  • I’ve been looking for a specific item off base but can’t find it. Where do local people shop?
  • I separate my trash, but the garbage collector won’t take it. How do people here sort their garbage?
  • I don’t need to become fluent in Japanese. I just want to learn useful phrases for everyday life.

Or studying Japanese, have you wondered;

  • I study grammar, vocabulary, and phrases, but I don’t know how to use them in a real conversation.
  • I can’t keep up when native Japanese speakers talk. Where can I practice listening and speaking?
  • I’m not sure if my pronunciation is right. Could a native speaker help me check it?
  • I’d like Japanese friends to practice with and help me stay motivated.

We have answers!

Ask Local Japanese Your Questions!

You don’t need to be fluent to start a conversation. At Blue House Okinawa, you can meet local Japanese students who are learning English too.

Ask where they like to eat, shop, or spend time. Practice Japanese together, hear how people use words and phrases in conversation, and help each other learn.

Learn real Japanese through real conversations with local people.

Language Exchange May '19

You’ve Studied Japanese. So Why Is Speaking Still So Hard?

You may know grammar, vocabulary, and useful phrases, yet still freeze when someone speaks to you in Japanese.

You might worry that you’ll say something wrong, mispronounce a word, or understand only part of the answer.

That doesn’t mean you’re bad at Japanese.

A real conversation is different from studying on your own: people answer in their own words, speak at their own pace, and keep the conversation moving.

You need a chance to practice using the Japanese you know with another person.

You Don’t Have to Be Fluent to Start

At Blue House Okinawa, you can bring your questions to class, check your Japanese and pronunciation with your instructor, and practice saying what you want to ask.

Then, through Language Exchange, you can try using it with local Japanese students who are learning English too.

What If I Don’t Understand?

You don’t have to understand every word or know exactly what to say next.

You can ask someone to repeat their answer:

もういちどいってください。
Could you say that one more time?

Start with one question, listen to what you can, and respond with the Japanese you know.

You and the Japanese students are both learning, so you can practice, make mistakes, and help each other along the way.

You don’t need perfect Japanese to begin.
You just need a place to start—and a chance to use what you’re learning.

Blue House Okinawa Japanese /English School Language Exchange 3

From Learning to Using

Knowing Japanese when the answer is in front of you and being able to bring it back on your own are two different things.

The first time you meet new Japanese, most of your attention goes to understanding it.

That is important, but understanding is only the beginning.

To use Japanese in a real conversation, you also need chances to remember it without looking, connect it to your own life, check it, and try it with another person.

The goal is not simply to recognize the answer.

It is to be able to bring the Japanese back when you need it.

See how our curriculum has built

Everything You Need to Study Japanese

Blue House Okinawa connects the steps above so the Japanese you study has somewhere to go.

We kept asking the same question: What should happen before a student is asked to speak?

For classes that include home study, we moved more of the reviewing and preparation outside the classroom so class time could be used for questions, pronunciation, practice, feedback, and speaking.

We did not add online tools just to make the class more digital.

We added them to make more room for practice.

The tools are not the destination. They prepare you for what comes next.

Textbook — Learn It

Your textbook introduces the vocabulary, grammar, expressions, and activities for each lesson.

It gives you the new Japanese you will keep working with as you review, prepare, practice, and eventually use it.

Study Room — Recall It

The Study Room is Blue House Okinawa’s online learning space. You can review vocabulary and expressions from your lesson with Flashcards with Audio and Quizzes.

The point is not only to recognize an answer when you see it. You practice bringing the Japanese back from memory so it is easier to recall later when you actually need it.

Workbook — Make It Yours

The Workbook helps you take the grammar and vocabulary from your lesson and connect it to your own life.

Instead of asking only, “What should I study?” you can begin asking, “What do I want to be able to say or understand next?”

Use what you study to prepare questions and answers about your work, weekend, family, interests, plans, and experiences. Preparation gives you something specific to ask, answer, check, or try in class.

The point of preparation is to give your next conversation something to start with.

Bring It Back to Class — Check It and Practice It

In class, you bring that Japanese with you.

Each lesson has two parts.

In the first half of the lesson, you work with your instructor. Ask the questions that came up while you were studying, check the wording, check your grammar and pronunciation, say what you prepared out loud, get feedback, and try again.

This first part gives you time to clarify and practice the Japanese before you use it with another person.

Then, in the second half of the lesson, the class moves into Language Exchange.

Language Exchange — Use It

A teacher can help you check the Japanese, but a real conversation shows you what happens when the answer is not the one you practiced.

In the second half of the lesson, Language Exchange gives you a place to take some of the Japanese you studied and practiced and try using it with another person.

Ask a question. Listen to the answer. If you miss something, ask again.

“Mou ichido itte kudasai.” — “One more time, please.”

You might understand the whole answer, or you might catch only a few words. Sometimes catching one more word the second time is enough to keep the conversation going.

A real answer may be different from the answer you practiced. That is part of the learning.

Every Conversation Gives You Something to Bring Back

  • I study grammar, vocabulary, and phrases, but I don’t know how to use them in a real conversation.
  • I can’t keep up when native Japanese speakers talk. Where can I practice listening and speaking?
  • I’m not sure if my pronunciation is right. Could a native speaker help me check it?
  • I’d like Japanese friends to practice with and help me stay motivated.

Mr. Hayes Joyner
Mr. Hayes Joyner

I remember my first class at Blue House Okinawa!

I was brand new to Okinawa and the Japanese language.

I was able to have basic exchanges, and it made me so happy to practice with native speakers and have such a fun community to learn in.

I’m two years into studying now and am so glad I found Blue House Okinawa from the beginning — it introduced me to some of my favorite people in Okinawa and is such a special place ❤️

A few points: 1. This is not a traditional school — they utilize the “flipped classroom” and “blended learning” models (if not familiar, google those terms. They’re interesting!).

Independent learners thrive here!

2. Since this is both an English & Japanese language school, I love that there are opportunities to both learn Japanese and help others learn English through Blue House’s conversational exchange club, read aloud club, and public speaking practice in our target language.

If you’re someone who takes initiative, there are so many real-life practice opportunities and study buddies here!

Beyond language-learning, I’ve loved the extra curriculars (trips, hikes, karaoke, BBQs, field trips).

It’s a wonderful group of people making a community learning program come to life!

It’s really made my time in Okinawa extra adventurous and interesting!

Ms. Sara Wray

I had spent about 8 months using online based methods to learn Japanese.

Blue House Okinawa gave me the opportunity to learn Japanese face-to-face with native Japanese speakers.

The language exchanges forced me to step outside of my shell and speak among our Japanese peers, which was exactly what I needed to do to gain confidence to apply my classroom learning to the real world.

Most importantly, it has been an incredibly fun experience to learn Japanese while helping others to learn English!

Mr. Tom Nelson

Making the decision to start studying Japanese at Blue House has been absolutely incredible!

Not only do we have a solid curriculum and get in class help with great teachers, we also have the opportunity to work with Japanese students that are learning English.

The language exchange portion of class, where we help these students learn English – and they our Japanese – is my favorite!

It’s really helpful to hear all of different pronunciations and dialects when you’re learning Japanese.

Also, it’s a wonderful place to make friends as well✨

Beginners 1 Class is the main starting point if you want Japanese to become a regular part of your week.

You’ll begin with pronunciation, Hiragana, greetings, self-introduction, useful vocabulary, basic sentence patterns, and simple questions.

JP Class Schedule 2027

A Few Things You May Still Be Wondering About?

I Don’t Know Any Japanese. Can I Start?

-Yes. Beginners 1 starts from zero.

I’ve Studied Before. Do I Have to Start Over?

-No. Compare the actual Japanese in each level and start where the material begins to feel new.

What If My Schedule Changes a Lot?

-Self-Paced and Flex options may work better if a Fixed Schedule doesn’t fit your life.

Do I Have to Take a Trial Lesson First?

-No. You can enroll directly if you already know which class you want.

If you’d rather visit first, ask questions, and get a clearer idea of where to start, a Trial Lesson is available for ¥2,200.

Still Have a Practical Question Before You Start?

If you know which course you want but still have a question about finding Blue House, parking, class schedules, or what to do before you arrive, you do not need to search through the other pages one by one.

Blue House Okinawa is near Sunabe Seawall, close to Kadena Air Base Gate 1.

Blue House Okinawa does not have its own parking lot.

If you are driving, please park along Sunabe Seawall and walk to the school from there.

Please do not park directly in front of Blue House Okinawa or along the surrounding residential streets.

Vowels

When you type
a,
i,
u,
e,
o
on your Japanese keyboard,
あ (a),
い (i),
う (u),
え (e),
お (o)
will appear.

Congratulations, you’re now typing in Japanese!

The five Japanese characters listed above are crucial because they represent the vowels in the Japanese language.

N

If you type “n” on your Japanese keyboard and notice no Japanese characters appear, try typing “n” twice.
Did the character ん appear after the second attempt?
Indeed, to type the unique character ん, you must press “n” twice.
This method is essential for accurately inputting Japanese text.

Small Characters

In Japanese textbooks or casual Japanese, you’ll often encounter half-sized characters.
While there are several special characters that can be half-sized, we’ll cover those in more detail in class later.
For now, just remember that typing “l” or “x” before a character makes it half-sized.

Try typing “a” and then “l+a”.
Did you notice the half-sized characters appear?
Can you see how ぁ is a half-sized version of あ?
If it’s not immediately clear, don’t worry—you’ll soon be able to distinguish them easily!

Double Consonant

The half-sized tsu, “つ”,  is crucial in Japanese as it denotes a double consonant.
When typing in romaji, you indicate this by doubling the consonant that follows the tsu.
Your Japanese keyboard will automatically insert a っ at the correct spot.

For instance, try typing “yatta”.
You should see やった appear on your screen.
This demonstrates how you can successfully type the half-sized tsu (っ) and master another aspect of typing in Japanese!

Kaomoji ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

Ready for a bit of Japanese keyboard magic?
Try typing “kaomoji” followed by pressing the spacebar and then either the down or up arrow key.

Do you see a selection of adorable faces?
The word “kaomoji” combines “kao” (face) and “moji” (character), literally translating to “face character.”
This is exactly what you’re exploring now—expressive faces made from text characters, adding fun and personality to your digital conversations!

Katakana & Kanji

To toggle between hiragana, katakana, or kanji, typically you just need to press the spacebar after typing the word in hiragana.
If you’ve entered the word correctly, predictive text will often suggest the word in katakana.
If not, it might be wise to verify the spelling using an online dictionary like Jisho.

Try typing “amerika” followed by the spacebar.
Did アメリカ appear in katakana as a suggestion?
If so, you can simply select アメリカ to choose it.

Congratulations!

You’re now equipped to type in hiragana, katakana, kanji, and even use kaomoji, just like native Japanese speakers!

Welcome!

Welcome to Blue House Okinawa!

If you’re looking to fully embrace your time in Okinawa Japan, diving into the Japanese language is the perfect beginning.

Sure, you could get by with just your native language, but learning Japanese will completely elevate your experience.
Language learning is an adventure that opens up a wealth of opportunities—friendships, career paths, networking, shopping adventures, travel experiences, and culinary delights.

This Incredible Journey

Here at Blue House Okinawa, we’ve created a one-of-a-kind community where learners of English and Japanese uplift and support each other, exchange cultural insights, and work together to achieve our language goals.
We’re all about fostering connections and real-world learning.
Welcome aboard!
Let’s embark on this incredible journey together.

More Than Just Language Learning

At Blue House Okinawa, our pride lies not just in teaching languages but in fostering a deeper capacity for learning and succeeding beyond the confines of traditional language education.

We’re dedicated to cultivating a spirit of independent, lifelong learning among our community members.
Our aim is for you to feel at ease using Japanese in your day-to-day life, engaging in practical interactions with confidence and ease.

The Real Challenge

Facing a Universal Hurdle

Joining us at Blue House Okinawa means becoming part of a wonderfully diverse group.
And if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that really getting to know each other involves much more than just speaking the same language.

The Real Challenge

Being fluent in Japanese is great, but it doesn’t automatically mean you’ll fit right into Japanese life.
The key to truly getting along and communicating well?
It’s about opening yourself up to the whole new world of perspectives and ways of thinking that make up Japanese culture, not just learning how to string sentences together.

What Mastery Really Means

Achieving real fluency in Japanese—or any language, really—is about pushing yourself out of what’s comfortable.
It’s about tackling the challenge directly.
We know a lot of you, especially those coming from English-speaking countries, might find Japan’s complex culture a bit of a leap.

That’s why we’re all about giving you the chance to really dive deep into the traditions, values, and the social nuances that are part of daily life here.

The Power of Cultural Understanding

Here’s the thing we stress at Blue House Okinawa: knowing the language is one thing, but understanding the heartbeat of the culture—like specific behaviors, the unwritten rules of social interaction, and the historical context—is what brings conversations to life.
This deeper understanding is what transforms your interactions from merely being effective to truly meaningful and respectful.

The Thing About Learning Languages

Ever Wondered, “Why Can’t I Speak Japanese Yet?”

Ever found yourself asking, “Why isn’t this Japanese sticking? I’ve been at it for ages!”?
You’re not alone.
A ton of folks tell us how tough it is to actually use the Japanese they’ve been studying so hard.

Picture this: you’ve been hitting the books, cramming all those words and grammar rules, and then, when it comes time to chat with a native speaker, you freeze up.
Sound familiar?

Here’s the Thing About Learning Languages

See, getting good at a language isn’t just about memorizing verbs and vocabulary.
It’s like a big puzzle with lots of different pieces – reading, listening, speaking, getting the pronunciation right, and even understanding the culture.

Often, schools focus a lot on the grammar and writing part, and not enough on the other bits.
So, you end up feeling stuck because you haven’t practiced those other skills enough to feel confident.

How We Do Things Differently at Blue House Okinawa

That’s where Blue House Okinawa shakes things up.
We’re all about giving you a well-rounded experience.
Here, you’ll get to work on all those skills – yes, even the ones that are a bit scary at first.

With a mix of practice with your fellow learners and conversations with native speakers, we aim to get you using Japanese in real-life situations sooner rather than later.

Our main goal?
To boost your confidence.
We want you to feel proud of using what you’ve learned, making mistakes, learning from them, and then trying again.

Let’s turn to those “Why can’t I speak Japanese yet?” moments into “Look at me speaking Japanese!” moments.

Speaking Practice Tips

Feeling Nervous About Speaking Japanese?

It’s pretty common to see folks hesitating to jump into a Japanese conversation.
Maybe you’re not quite sure how to get a particular word or phrase out right.
We get it, and honestly, it’s a hurdle you can clear pretty quickly once you’re part of the Blue House Okinawa family.

Speaking Practice Tips

Here, you’ll get plenty of chances to flex your conversational muscles through our Language Exchanges with native speakers.
These sessions are goldmines because they teach you two crucial things:

    1. Making mistakes is totally fine – actually, it’s part of the learning process!
    2. You’ll learn how to fix those slip-ups on the fly.

Remember,

You might be surprised to discover you know way more than you give yourself credit for.
The key is to keep trying and putting what you’ve learned into practice.
The more you do it, the smoother it’ll get.

And hey, remember this: Japanese folks find English just as tricky as you find Japanese.
They totally get the effort you’re making and will appreciate your attempts to chat in their language.
So flash that smile and dive in – you’re going to do awesome!

Real Conversational Skills

Mixing Learning with Real Connections

We’re incredibly lucky to host local Japanese students who are eager to learn English at Blue House Okinawa .
This sets the stage for our Language Exchange program, an integral part of what we offer.

Picture this: engaging in genuine conversations with native Japanese speakers and experiencing the language as it’s truly spoken.

Learning Is a Two-Way Street

The Language Exchange is all about jumping in and getting involved.
It’s a student-driven, mutually beneficial setup where the real learning happens through exchange.
There’s no need to wait until your Japanese is flawless.

Start speaking from day one, even if it means getting creative with gestures to get your point across. Your Japanese counterparts are there to help guide you towards better accuracy.

Engage, Ask, Share

This is your chance to dive deeper than ever before.
Ask questions, exchange cultural insights, and offer feedback.
Building your speaking confidence comes from these real, interactive experiences.

The Language Exchange program is designed not just for you to practice Japanese, but to use it in practical, everyday situations.

Make Meaningful Connections

Through Language Exchange, you’ll meet and connect with our Japanese students.
These aren’t just language practice sessions; they’re opportunities to forge genuine friendships, understand the Japanese way of life, and gain insights that books alone can’t teach.

It’s about bringing your textbook knowledge into the vibrant, real world of communication.

Keys to Mastery

Learning Is More Than Just Understanding

When we tackle something new, it’s normal to pour all our focus into understanding the basics rather than practicing straight away.
Once things start to make a bit more sense, that’s our cue to start applying what we’ve picked up.

Here at Blue House Okinawa, we’ve got a bunch of ways to get you actively using your new skills, whether that’s with fellow members, out in the community, or during  Language Exchanges or Study Exchange.

Progressing at Your Own Pace

Typically, we move to the next level when we’re comfy with about 80% of what we’ve learned.
But what if you’re not quite there?
It’s absolutely okay to circle back and retake a course.
We often find that the second go-around is where the magic happens.

You’re more engaged, the concepts aren’t totally foreign anymore, and everything just clicks better.
This not only smooths out the move to the next level but also pumps up your confidence.

The Joy of Rediscovery

It’s kind of like rewatching a favorite movie or rereading a beloved book—you catch all those nuances and details that zoomed by the first time.
Real growth comes from being able to apply what you’ve learned fluidly, not just having checked off a class or finished a textbook.

Building a Solid Foundation

Before pushing ahead, it’s crucial to ask yourself if you’ve really got a solid grip on the basics or if you could use a bit more practice.
For those of us speaking English natively, Japanese can be a tough nut to crack.

That’s why revisiting material, especially if you’re hitting a wall, can be a game-changer.
And you’re not alone if you’ve ever questioned your brain’s capacity to tackle Japanese—it’s a common feeling, trust us.

Embrace the Challenge

Japanese will humble you, no doubt about it.
But every challenge is a chance to grow.
If you’re feeling stuck, consider jumping into a review class or connecting with our community events to keep the motivation high.

Remember, it’s all part of the journey, and at Blue House Okinawa, we’re all about making each step of that journey as enriching and confidence-building as possible.

A Guide to Japanese Grammar

“A Guide to Japanese Grammar” by Tae Kim

Mr. Kim is the author of one of our favorite books at Blue House Okinawa, A Guide to Japanese Grammar.

To begin with, here are a few critical points we want to share from his text:
“Unlike some Romance Languages that you may have studied, there is no direct translation from English to Japanese.”

Mr. Kim gives the example that many students want to begin by learning phrases such as,
“I am Mr. Smith,” so they translate it directly: “watashi wa Smith desu.”

This is unnatural Japanese.

For example, Japanese speakers most often omit the subject (I), and the accurate translation, “Smith desu,” would merely be “Smith” in English.

We must let go of our English sentence structures to be successful in Japanese. Knowing that, immediately give up the idea of direct, word-for-word translations.

You’ll very quickly realize it’s impossible anyway, as Japanese does not contain articles such as “the” and “a”.

“Change your mindset, learn Japanese. Do not try to use English phrases in Japanese.”

As Mr. Kim writes, “If you find yourself trying to figure out how to say an English thought in Japanese, save yourself the trouble and stop because you won’t get it right most of the time.

You should always keep in mind that if you don’t know how to say it already, then you don’t know how to say it …ask someone how to say it in Japanese including a full explanation of the answer and start practicing from Japanese.”

Further,

“If you practice from the answer, you will develop good habits that will help you formulate correct and natural Japanese sentences. This is why I’m a firm believer of learning by example.”

Build your Japanese like you would a house – with focus on a strong foundation.

Do not rush!

Many textbooks sacrifice accuracy and a true understanding of Japanese by using English-based thoughts and approaches.

However, Japanese is so fundamentally different in syntax and approach that it will be very difficult to progress in your learning without adjusting your thought process from the beginning.

As Mr. Kim notes,

“…There are advantages and disadvantages to systematically building a grammatical foundation from the ground up. In Japanese, the most fundamental grammatical concepts are often the most difficult to truly understand.

This means that the hardest part of the language will come first.”

Many teachers and students attempt to skip this process by learning phrases or using poor translations based on English patterns, but at Blue House Okinawa we face the challenges head-on for long-term rewards in language acquisition.

What Other Students Say

Mr. Hayes Joyner
Mr. Hayes Joyner
I remember my first class at Blue House Okinawa! I was brand new to Okinawa and the Japanese language. I was able to have basic exchanges, and it made me so happy to practice with native speakers and have such a fun community to learn in. I’m two years into studying now and am so glad I found Blue House Okinawa from the beginning — it introduced me to some of my favorite people in Okinawa and is such a special place ❤️ A few points: 1.
The language exchange portion of class, where we help these students learn English - and they our Japanese - is my favorite! It’s really helpful to hear all of different pronunciations and dialects when you’re learning Japanese. Also, it’s a wonderful place to make friends as well✨

Blue House Okinawa is an excellent place to learn Japanese and make some friends while doing so. The staff that work there are extremely friendly and provide an encouraging environment to learn! The classes are straightforward, with both in class and online work integrated. I also really like and enjoy the language exchange as well. I am so happy I found this place. I would recommend this place to anyone trying to learn Japanese or English.

I really enjoy the Japanese classes at Blue House! Some specifics: - Ample opportunities to connect with other Japanese students and English students - Small class size and good instructors - I also like that through interacting with the students in higher levels, I can see what's possible for me if I keep studying. It's very encouraging. I was a bit hesitant to enroll because of the possibility of classes being held on Zoom. About halfway through my course we went on Zoom and I was worried the quality would deteriorate, but I'm still very happy with my experience and feel engaged with my instructor and classmates even though we are virtual.

I love taking biweekly Japanese classes at the Blue House Okinawa! Besides helping me learn a new language, I have been able to learn a lot about Japan culturally and have been able to make some Japanese friends because of the language exchange element of each class. The small class size is awesome because it allows me to ask questions easily and learn more about what I’m particularly interested or am finding difficult to understand. I would definitely recommend Blue House Okinawa to anyone on island looking to learn Japanese language and culture!

I arrived in Okinawa a few months ago and was looking for a place to learn Japanese. I'm glad I found Blue House Okinawa. It is a place that provides a positive, encouraging environment for you to practice learning and speaking the language. The language exchanges provide those who are learning English and Japanese an environment where everyone can improve their skills. Highly recommended.

Everyone is so friendly! I was very nervous walking because I'm new, but they welcomed me with open arms and I got comfortable quickly! You learn with other Japanese learners, then work with the English Learners! So, you can practice your Japanese with natives and vice versa with them. Highly recommend!

I love Blue House Okinawa. It works with my busy schedule and is extremely flexible. My favorite aspect is that you are learning Japanese and practicing alongside students who are attempting to learn English.
Mr. Renie
Blue House Okinawa is a welcoming and fun language and cultural community! The teachers are fantastic and everyone is there for love of learning. The opportunity for native English and Japanese speakers to exchange knowledge and share the learning experience combined with social and educational cultural gatherings can’t be found anywhere else! The small class sizes make sure you feel comfortable asking questions and get a tailored approach to learning. The books, videos, and in class teaching time reinforce the concepts. And the in class exchange ensures you get practice speaking, not just reading and listening!

Japanese Learning Tips

Who We Are

Beyond Language Learning

A Close-Knit Multilingual Community
Join us and become part of a vibrant community where Japanese and English learners teach and learn from each other.

Authentic and Immersive Practice
Experience genuine language practice with native Japanese speakers in our Japanese class providing endless opportunities for real-world application.

Supportive and Community-Centered
Embrace a relaxed, community-oriented approach to learning. Together, we support, grow, and share joyful moments, making every step of the journey enjoyable.

Have you felt like...

Why Can't I Speak Japanese Yet?

One of the most common challenges reported to us is how much difficulty Japanese learners have in interacting in their target language. For example, despite perhaps years of dedicated study in Japanese, many learners feel paralyzed and defeated in interactions with native Japanese speakers.

This challenge is largely due to the fact that language-learning is multifaceted. Proficiency requires separate yet overlapping skills, such as reading, listening, writing, cultural awareness, speaking, pronunciation, etc. Schools often emphasize grammar, reading and writing over other aspects.

Thus, learners become discouraged and feel as if they don’t know anything after years of study, when in fact they just haven’t had sufficient practice in a particular skill to make them a balanced learner.

At Blue House Okinawa, students are given the opportunity to develop all areas of language to build towards proficiency. We provide practical listening and speaking practice with both peer learners and native speakers. Our goal is to build club students’ confidence and put their learning to use quickly and often.

Or do you feel like...

I'm nervous about speaking in Japanese....

We’ve seen learners struggling in Japanese conversation, as sometimes they’re unsure of how to say specific words or phrases.

This is a regular concern that is easy to overcome once you become a student of Blue House Okinawa.

You can prepare for conversational success by communicating in Japanese with native speakers in our class. These tools are most valuable because you learn:

1. It is ok to make mistakes, and

2. How to correct those mistakes.

You will soon find you know more than you think you do! The more you try and do, the better you will become.

Remember that for Japanese people, English is just as hard for them, as Japanese is for you. They appreciate your attempts to converse in their language and will try to find a way to communicate with you.

Just keep trying and you’ll do great!

Those are the reasons why we offer

More Speaking Practice

As we also have Japanese speakers who are learning English, we’re fortunate to have a wonderful Language Exchange program as a part of our curriculum.

In the Language Exchange, you can practice Japanese speaking with real Japanese people, native Japanese speakers. Here’s where the give-and-take of learning happens! It’s student-driven and set up as a mutually-beneficial learning program.

In the Language Exchange, don’t wait for perfection to speak Japanese — start with what you can, even if it turns into charades, and let your native speaking peers guide you to accuracy! Ask questions, share cultural insights, and provide feedback to each other while building your Japanese speaking confidence.

This Language Exchange program will let you be able to learn Japanese in a practical way and practice what you have learned right away. You will meet some of our Japanese friends and make real connections with them to learn the Japanese culture and deepen your intercultural understanding.

It’s a fantastic way to bridge the gap between textbook learning and communicating in the real world!

Beyond Language-Learning

We pride ourselves in our focus on building the ability to learn and succeed beyond learning language. We seek to nurture independent, lifelong learning.

Our goal is to get comfortable operating in Japanese in everyday, practical interactions. Much of successful language learning is going beyond your comfort zone and just going for it!

As many native English speakers are coming from cultures that greatly contrast that of Japan’s, Blue House Okinawa provides ample opportunity to learn about the values, history, and influences in Japanese society.
